Electric Trike Recalls and Safety Warnings

A running record of what has been recalled and warned about in this category, and the distinction nobody explains: the notice that sounds weaker is the one that leaves you with nothing.

Most people arrive here having already bought one.

Something has come up in a search, or a neighbour mentioned it, and now there is a machine in the garage that somebody in your household rides and a question you would rather have asked in February. Is this thing on a list.

This page is the list, kept in one place. It is short, which is worth saying plainly rather than burying: this is not a category with a long recall history. But one of the two entries on it is a kind of notice most people have never heard of, and it is the one that matters more, because it is the one that leaves owners holding the whole loss themselves.

The two published actions

Both come from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Both concern adult electric tricycles. They are not the same kind of thing at all.

Published US safety actions on adult electric tricycles, to one scaleA public warning issued in January 2026 covers about 7,490 tricycles for tipping over during turning, with no remedy agreed. A recall issued in December 2025 covers about 400 fat-tyre trikes for a hairline weld fracture, with a remedy agreed. The un-remedied action covers about nineteen times as many machines.WHAT HAS ACTUALLY BEEN ACTIONEDUnit counts from the CPSC notices, drawn to one scale.PUBLIC WARNING — JANUARY 2026Tipping over in turns · six investigated falls · no remedy agreed7,490RECALL — DECEMBER 2025Hairline weld fracture · 16 frame breakages · remedy agreedAbout 400The action that leaves owners with nothing covers about nineteen times as many machinesas the one that gets them a repair.

January 2026 — a public warning on Liberty Trike 16 in and 20 in electric tricycles

On 15 January 2026 the CPSC issued a public warning covering roughly 7,490 Liberty Trike 16 in and 20 in electric tricycles, saying they can tip over during turning. Six falls were investigated, with injuries including concussions, fractures and contusions.

The importer has not agreed to a recall, stating it cannot afford a remedy. The agency’s advice to owners is therefore not “bring it in for a repair”. It is to stop using the tricycle and dispose of it.

We are naming the brand at the top of this page rather than at the bottom, which is against how the rest of this site is written. A safety notice is the one place where withholding a name to preserve a house style would be indefensible.

December 2025 — a recall of about 400 Pedego fat-tyre trikes

On 18 December 2025, notice 26-152 recalled about 400 Pedego Fat Tire Trikes after sixteen reports of a hairline fracture in a frame weld, with one laceration injury. A remedy was agreed. Owners get one.

Why the smaller word is the bigger problem

This is the part worth understanding even if you never own either machine.

What a recall gets an owner, against what a public warning gets themA recall means the firm has agreed a remedy: repair, replacement or refund, paid for by the firm, with registered owners contacted. A public warning is issued when the firm has not agreed a remedy: there is no repair, no refund, the owner absorbs the loss, and the safety agency may simply advise them to stop using the product. The underlying hazard can be identical.THE WEAKER WORD IS THE WORSE OUTCOMETwo safety instruments. Only one of them ends with you being made whole.A RECALLThe firm has agreed a remedyRepair, replacement or refundThe firm pays for itOwners are contactedA defect, and defects get fixedYou are made wholeA PUBLIC WARNINGThe firm has not agreed oneNo repair, no refundYou paid, and you absorb itAdvice can be to stop ridingThe hazard can be identicalYou are on your ownA warning is issued when a firm will not or cannot act. It is not a lesser finding.Search both, not just recalls, before buying anything in this category.
A recall and a public warning are different instruments with different consequences for the owner. Only one of them ends with somebody other than you paying.

A recall means the firm has agreed a remedy. You get a repair, a replacement or a refund, the firm pays, and registered owners get contacted. The hazard is treated as a defect, and defects get fixed.

A public warning is what the agency issues when a firm will not or cannot agree to any of that. The hazard can be every bit as serious — here it is more serious, by every measure that is published — and the owner gets nothing. No repair. No refund. In this case, advice to dispose of a machine somebody paid four figures for.

So when you search before buying, search both. A brand with no recalls is not the same as a brand with nothing against it, and the word that sounds like the milder outcome is the one that leaves you worst off.

The distinction that matters more than either notice

A residential street corner of the kind that sets the tightest turn most riders take regularly

Read those two entries again and notice they are not the same category of problem.

A hairline weld fracture is a manufacturing defect. Something was made wrong, it can be identified, and a recall can fix it. That is what recalls are for and it worked here.

Tipping over during turning is not a defect. It is a property of having three rigid wheels, and no recall will ever remove it from any trike, from any maker, at any price. A trike cannot lean, so in a turn its weight is held up by geometry alone, and past a threshold it rolls over the edge of its own wheelbase.

Plan view of a three-wheeled trike showing the diagonal axis it tips over in a turnThe three contact patches of a delta trike form a triangle. In a turn the trike rolls over the diagonal edge running from the front contact patch to the outside rear wheel. The lever resisting that roll is the perpendicular distance from the centre of mass to that diagonal, about 8.8 inches, rather than half the track width, about 12.7 inches.THE EDGE A TRIKE ROLLS OVERPlan view, to scale from one model's published width and wheelbase. It is not half the track. The edge a trike rolls over is the diagonal from the front contact patch to the outside rear wheel, not the track width. Drawn to scale from published geometry.

We did that arithmetic in full in do electric trikes tip over. On published geometry it lands around a quarter of a g — roughly 6 mph in a tight turn — and the lever is shorter than the track width suggests.

That is why a clean recall record is not the safety information you actually need. The mechanism that produced six investigated falls is present, to some degree, in every upright trike on sale, including the ones on this page. What varies between them is how much margin the geometry gives you and how high the seat lets you sit.

The verdict

There is one purchase that changes the documented outcomes here, and it is not a trike.

The injuries in the warning notice are concussions, fractures and contusions — the injuries of a sideways fall from seat height onto a hard surface. Geometry changes how often that happens. A helmet changes what it costs when it does.

What we like

  • Around 13,010 ratings, the largest sample in adult helmets we found — real aggregated owner reporting, unlike anything in the trike category
  • Dial adjuster and 58 to 62 cm fit range, which covers most adult heads
  • Meets 16 CFR 1203, which is mandatory for every bicycle helmet sold in the United States
  • Concussion is named in the published injuries; this is the only item on the page that addresses it

What we don't

  • The CPSC standard on the label is the legal floor, not a feature — do not pay a premium for it being mentioned
  • Twenty vents means it is a ventilation-first design rather than a coverage-first one
  • The seller did not render cleanly when we checked the listing, so we cannot tell you who ships it
  • No helmet does anything about the cornering threshold itself

Ordered by what each item does about the hazards in the notices above. Trike geometry is the makers' published figures, read on 29 August 2026.

You already own a trike and want to know if it is affected

Search the CPSC database for the brand and check for public warnings, not only recalls. Then register the machine with the maker if you have not — the entire mechanism by which owners get told about a remedy runs through that registration, and most people skip it at unboxing.

You are buying, and this page has made you cautious

Good. Buy the geometry: the widest track and the longest wheelbase you can get, and then set the seat as low as you can still pedal properly. That last adjustment is free and it does more than the difference between any two models here.

See the widest-track trike See the low-seat trike

You have realised you do not actually need three wheels

Then the roll-over mode goes away completely, because a bicycle cannot roll — it leans, and past its grip it slides at ground level. If putting a foot down at a junction is not something you think about, two wheels remove the hazard in both notices rather than managing it.

Where this range stands

A rider on a quiet road wearing a fastened helmet, the item named in the verdict above

As of our check on 29 August 2026, no recall and no public warning covered any of the MoonCool machines in our catalogue.

That is not evidence of immunity, and we will not present it as one. A clean record on a young range with review counts between 2 and 67 is a statement about how much has been reported, not about how the machines behave. Nothing here has been ridden by us, and the whole category is ranked on published geometry for that reason.

What we can say is that this range publishes unusually complete geometry — total width, wheelbase, stand-over and seat range on every model — which is what lets the cornering arithmetic be done at all. Most competitors do not publish enough to check.

Before you ride it again

  1. Look at the welds around the rear axle, both sides, in daylight. A hairline fracture is visible before it is a failure.
  2. Search the CPSC database for your brand, and search for warnings as well as recalls.
  3. Register the machine with the maker, today, if you never did.
  4. Set the seat as low as you can still pedal properly. It is the one stability control you own and it costs nothing.
  5. Check tyre pressure. A soft tyre squirms under exactly the cornering load these notices are about.
  6. Pace out the tightest turn on your usual route and read the speed off the chart in the tipping guide. It is slower than you expect.

Questions people ask

Have electric trikes been recalled? One recall of about 400 fat-tyre trikes in December 2025 for a weld fracture, with a remedy. Separately, a public warning in January 2026 on roughly 7,490 tricycles for tipping in turns, with no remedy agreed.

What is the difference between a recall and a public warning? A recall means the firm has agreed a repair, replacement or refund. A warning is what the agency issues when it has not. The hazard can be worse in the second case, and the owner gets nothing.

Is my trike on the list? Search the CPSC database by brand, and check both instruments. If it is under the January 2026 warning, the published advice is to stop using it.

Are electric trikes safe? They remove one failure — falling over at a standstill — and add another that no recall can fix, which is rolling in a turn. Whether that trade is good depends entirely on which failure you are actually at risk of.

Does a wider trike fix the tipping problem? It helps by less than it looks, because the edge it rolls over is a diagonal rather than the track. Seat height is the bigger lever and it is free.

Should I buy a used trike from a recalled range? Not without confirming the remedy was carried out, in writing. Second-hand machines are precisely the ones that fall out of the notification chain.

Sourcing. The public warning of 15 January 2026 on Liberty Trike 16 in and 20 in electric tricycles — approximately 7,490 units, six investigated incidents, importer not agreeing to a recall — and CPSC notice 26-152 of 18 December 2025 recalling about 400 Pedego Fat Tire Trikes for a hairline weld fracture are both CPSC publications, and the unit counts, injury counts and remedy status are theirs. The recall-versus-warning comparison is our summary of how the two instruments work. Trike geometry is MoonCool’s published specification, read on 29 August 2026. The quarter-of-a-g roll threshold is our arithmetic from that geometry and is derived in do electric trikes tip over.

We check this page when something new is published rather than on a schedule, and it carries the date of the last check above. If a notice is missing from it, tell us — that is the correction we act on fastest. More on how we research, and the rest of the cluster is in electric trikes.

Specifications here are checked against the live listing on the date shown, and figures we derive ourselves are labelled where they appear.
