How we test
Most "best X" articles are a rewritten Amazon bestseller list. Here is what we actually do instead, including where our limits are.
Step 01
We start from the complaint, not the catalogue
Before shortlisting anything we read through owner reviews, subreddit threads and return-reason patterns for the category. The recurring complaints become the scoring criteria — not the spec sheet the manufacturer wrote.
Step 02
We check the real selling price
Home gym gear is priced theatrically. We track the actual street price over several weeks so a permanent "50% off" is treated as the real price, and we exclude products whose price swings so wildly that a recommendation would go stale in a fortnight.
Step 03
We weight apartment constraints heavily
Noise on impact, floor footprint, storage height and assembly weight decide whether equipment survives in a flat. A dumbbell set that wakes your downstairs neighbour gets used twice.
Step 04
We rank on durability signals, not star ratings
A 4.6-star average built on two-week-old reviews tells you nothing. We look for reports at six months and beyond, and we specifically hunt for the failure point — the welded joint, the plastic selector pin, the foam that compresses flat. Price is no guarantee here: expensive gear fails too, just more expensively.
Step 05
We revisit and update
Models get discontinued and quietly revised all the time. Guides carry an updated date, and picks that go out of stock or drop in quality get replaced rather than left to rot at the top of the page.
Where our limits are
We are a small independent site, not a lab. We do not run destructive load testing, and we have not personally owned every product in every guide. Where a pick is based on aggregated owner reporting rather than hands-on use, we say so in the guide itself. We would rather tell you the basis of a recommendation than imply a testing rig we don't have.
